The journey into book illustration

My beloved Scottie dogs—Patrick, Dussia, Prosha, Ben, and Solomon—inspired my venture into book illustration. Their playful spirit and unique personalities led me to fantastic writers, and together we've brought many wonderful stories to life. Many of the books I've illustrated feature the charming adventures of Scottie dogs. On this page, you'll find a selection of my illustrations and links to purchase these delightful books.

For every age, a story awaits

My illustrations cater to a diverse audience. Some books are vibrant picture books, perfect for young children aged 3 to 7, filled with engaging visuals. Others are captivating chapter books designed for kids aged 7 and older, fostering a love for reading and adventure. Interestingly, many grown-up Scottie owners also adore these books, finding joy and connection in the charming narratives and illustrations.

Infusing stories with humor and heart

When illustrating stories for children, my primary goal is to evoke a sense of humor, warmth, and adorable personification in every picture. I believe illustrations should not only complement the text but also add layers of emotion and character, making the story more relatable and memorable for young readers. My art aims to bring smiles and spark imagination, inviting children into a world where characters are full of life and personality.

"The Astonishing and Occasionally Disastrous Adventures of Lucas, Benjamin and Franklin" by Yulia Austin

"Some stories begin in a moment of inspiration. Others begin quietly, in the everyday magic of family life.Mine began the day my son Lucas was born. When Lucas came into the world, Benjamin and Franklin — our two Scottish Terriers — were already here, full of energy, personality, and mischief. From the moment they met, something beautiful happened:

The three of them became inseparable.

Lucas grew up with Scotties by his side — first Benjamin and Franklin, who sparked countless “astonishing and occasionally disastrous” moments, and now Bartholomew (Barty), our newest Scottish Terrier companion. And yes… I already hope one day he’ll get his own story too. As Lucas grew, the stories grew with him. I started writing them down many years ago — small memories, scenes, adventures, and emotions that I didn’t want to forget. But it wasn’t until about a year ago that I decided to bring them all together and shape them into a book.

And that’s when I knew exactly who I needed by my side.

Elena Adam (Lena) — my illustrator, my childhood friend, and now my creative partner in crime.  I''ve known Elena since we were young. Life took us in different directions, but when I came to the States, we reconnected in the most unexpected and wonderful way. Now she lives in Michigan with her husband and her own two Scottish Terriers. As soon as I decided this book needed illustrations, I knew there was no one else who could capture the soul of these characters the way Elena could. She doesn’t just draw Scotties — she understands them. She brings out their courage, their humor, their stubborn charm, and their enormous hearts. She is, without question, the perfect artist to help bring this story to life.

Here’s to Lucas. Here’s to Benjamin, Franklin, and Barty. Here’s to Elena and her talent. And here’s to the adventure that’s finally becoming a reality." - Yulia Austin, author
